soil building and other products

Healthy plants start with building healthy living soil. On our farm in South Knox County, we focus on creating a strong microbial community through the use of organic compost using locally sourced food wastes, biochar, worm castings, cover crops, and compost teas.

We also have native cut flowers and worm castings from locally composted food waste.

How we grow healthy plants

cOMPOST

We collect food waste from local restaurants, coffee houses and breweries, and aerobically compost to help create healthy soil for our plants.

cOVERcROPS

When we are not growing market crops, the ground is planted to other plants like rye, turnips, and clover to build soil and keep the soil community happy and fed throughout the year.

bIOCHAR

Organic biochar is added to our compost to absorb and hold micronutrients and create living quarters for beneficial soil microbes.

compost tea

We treat our soil and plants with an occasional dose of super charged compost. Compost tea is created by feeding compost microbes so that they multiply rapidly. When multiplied, we add them to the beds to continue their soil building work.

WORM CASTINGS

We feed our partially finished compost to red wigglers who turn it into the most precious of soil amendments for our plants.

chemical free

We use no chemicals or synthetic fertilizers.

The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life.
